CDC issues flood warning as heavy rainfall threatens low-lying communities
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is urging residents across Guyana to remain alert as continued rainfall and saturated soil conditions increase the risk of flooding, mudslides and dangerous weather impacts this week.
According to the Hydrometeorological Service, weather activity between May 19 and 23 is expected to worsen conditions in low-lying and flood-prone communities, with additional rainfall likely to trigger flooding and ponding in several areas. Hilly and elevated regions are also at risk of land slippage and mudslides due to oversaturated ground conditions.
The CDC warned that thunderstorms may bring strong winds and lightning strikes, posing further threats to residents and infrastructure. Citizens are being advised to avoid flood-prone areas, exercise caution while driving during heavy showers, keep drains and waterways clear, and monitor official weather updates closely.
Authorities say periods of light to moderate rainfall, isolated thundershowers, gusty winds and reduced visibility are expected throughout the week.
