Man, 32, arrested after nine buildings destroyed by fire at Apaiqua Landing

A 32-year-old resident of Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, was arrested and questioned as Police conitnue investigations into the major fire at Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River.

The fire of unknown origin destroyed nine buildings.

In a release, Police Headquarters said preliminary investigations revealed that a 40-year-old businessman of Mainstay/Whyaka Village, Essequibo Coast, was awakened by a fire originating from a nearby unoccupied wooden structure. An alarm was raised, and public-spirited citizens responded by activating water pumps. However, the fire spread rapidly, destroying several buildings in the area.

Several persons also sustained losses as a result of the fire, including business establishments.

The 32-year-old who was arrested remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
