The Demerara Harbour Bridge company has announced that because of an accident in which a tug and a barge collided with the bridge, it will be closed until further notice.
The closure of the bridge will affect thousands of commuters who use it to cross from West Demerara to the East Bank and Georgetown. The accident comes on the first day of the new school year.
The Government has not immediately announced what alternative measures would be put in place to assist affected commuters.
With the bridge down, the only means of crossing the river is by way of speedboat from the Vreed-en-hoop and Georgetown stelling.
